WHITE HASSLE NEWS (3/05): The boys are putting finishing touches on recordings for what will be their next CD, tentatively titled "Your Language." Mastering and shipping the tapes to Fargo Records in France will follow. A European tour is in the works for later this year. The search for a decent American label continues. Last month the boys played to a packed room with new guest guitarist, Joachim Kearns, at Mercury Lounge. Joachim will join them for the upcoming Tonic show. Look for favorites DJ Atsushi Numata and theremin player Meredith Yayanos at the Tonic show also. Newly recorded songs - which include 'Your Language,' 'It's Your Turn,' 'You'd Be Surprised,' 'Neon, Not the Night,' 'Garden (Shake It),' 'Lazy Susan,' '2 Fingers Crossed (rock version),' 'Colors & the Kids,' 'Star Position,' 'All The Night Long,' 'Sweet Eloise,' 'Halfway Done with the Tour,' and 'Vodka Talking' - feature guitar stylings by Chris Maxwell and Jack Martin. Other contributers include Ali Smith; Meredith Yayanos; Ambrosia Parsley; Phil Hernandez; and, of course, the inimitable Atsushi Numata. The renown producing duo, Elegant Too - aka Chris Maxwell and Phil Hernandez - are co-producing the new recordings. Recently WHITE HASSLE contributed their previously recorded version of the 70's rock hit 'Rock Me Gently' (by Canadian Andy Kim) to a German compilation on the Gutfeeling label of Munich.

WHITE HASSLE NEWS (8/04):
The boys are presently polishing off tracks for their forthcoming album on Fargo records (www.fargorecords.com). Marcellus Hall played a solo set at NYC's Pianos last month and the band made a trip to Philadelphia opening for comedian Todd Barry. Two shows are coming up, one at Tonic in NYC and the other in Cambridge (ie. Boston), Massachusetts. Meanwhile Rolling Stone magazine reports that the singer of Modest Mouse, Isaac Brock, has taken to tattooing White Hassle song titles on his arm. Read the article

"Brock pinpoints his change in attitude to a song he heard as Modest Mouse were bottoming out, called "Life Is Still Sweet," by the New York band White Hassle. "When I heard it, I thought, 'This is nice. This is actually an unsarcastically positive song.' I was like, 'Let's fuck this doom-and- gloom bullshit.' It was a really good thing to get reminded of, you know?"
One night in El Paso, Texas, Brock got drunk and tattooed life is still sweet on his own forearm. He says, laying his arm on the bar to show the thick, shaky lines of black ink, "I made up my mind that things were going to be better."

WHITE HASSLE NEWS (4/04):
The boys have just recorded basic tracks in Woodstock for a future album. Newly recorded songs include "Your Language," "Star Position," "Your Turn," "Colors & The Kids," "You Be The Garden (Shake It Shake It)," and a 1920 Irving Berlin song "You'd Be Surprised" with Ambrosia of the wildly popular (in France) Shivaree. White Hassle's current CD, The Death of Song, is available now from www.orangerecordings.com (www.fargorecords.com in Europe and www.mazri.com in Japan). Plans are underway for the boys to hit some key Eastern seaboard cities this summer for promotion. Many of you have heard a snippet of White Hassle's 2000 hit "Watertank" on some MTV show. No doubt the boys are raking it in publicity-wise from this bit of good fortune. Fans present at February's packed Living Room show had the rare privilege of hearing WH's horn section perform on the 1997 classic "Tom the Harlequin" (Matador Records). Watch for them at this Monday's show. Also look for the possible guest appearance of Meredith Yayanos on theremin.

FARGO RECORDS PRESS RELEASE:
"The Death Of Song"
Release date : May 19th
(FA20357)The past two years have been a rock’n’roller coaster ride for the New-York public. The most recent arrival in the rebirth of rock is White Hassle. They have just launched their seminal second album: The Death Of Song.
The group has already been hailed by the local music press who have been hot on the tracks of singer Marcellus Hall since his early days with Railroad Jerk. The Death Of Song, combines the best of The Strokes, The Modern Lovers and circa ’64 Rolling Stones … the kind of unanswerable riposte that should sway the battle raging on the rock front between New-York and Detroit.

September 2001: The Strokes' debut album heralded the return of
New-York rock … the same month the city was rocked to its foundations by the worst tragedy in its history. In many respects 2001 was ‘year zero’ for the city … it was also the beginning of a fantastic artistic renaissance with a whole host of new names including Radio 4, Liars, The Moldy Peaches, The Boggs and Jeffrey Lewis.

May 2003 : White Hassle came racing down the tracks with the album The Death Of Song. The title song celebrates, with a note of sarcasm, the death of the standard song format : "No more of the same old thing/No more a song you will hear !". Tucked away in an opus, crackling with energy and life, this folk nugget sums up the spirit of the 78 rpm tunes compiled by the legendary Harry Smith. This is a lesson in claiming back a musical heritage that had been left out in the cold for far too long. The song is not representative of the album musically … and yet it perfectly encapsulates the spirit of The Death of Song: a phoenix rising from the ashes of the 11th September … a place where past, present and future join forces!
The Death Of Song , far from confirming the demise of rock, rings out like the taunting revenge of those who always knew that rock was alive and kicking. The rest of the album proves them right ! White Hassle first caught the attention of rock scribes six years ago, thanks to the 1997 release of National Chain on Matador records. When guitarist Matt Oliverio joined up in 1999 the group moved into top gear.
The EP Life Is Still Sweet was released in 2001 on Orange Recordings.
But the group remained New York’s best-kept secret until the release of the remarkable album The Death Of Song.
Marcellus Hall, White Hassle’s lead vocalist and songwriter, confirms the that album was indeed the fruit of a period of severe hassle : "
The actual recording didn’t take long – but we lost a lot of time due to various administrative and financial problems. There was a good side to it all as it gave us more time to refine the songs and get straight to the point. I don’t think we’ve lost any of the spontaneity and freshness of the initial recordings."
This feeling of “spontaneity and freshness” is just one of the album’s many strengths. The Death Of Song takes off full throttle with the explosive She's Dead - torn and slashed by DJ Atsushi Numata’s furious scratches.
White Hassle’s second album oozes class and urgency … not unlike the early Rolling Stones with tracks like I Was Sleeping, I Will Be Thine and The Air That I Breathe.
White Hassle even bring to mind The Modern Lovers, with their
phenomenally laid back approach on such sublime songs as Jealousy (Will Get You) and The Indiana Sun. They could be the Stroke’s older brothers : White Hassle appear more mature with lyrics like: "Let's not worry when we're thirty…" (From the track Resolution ) and dare I say it, more cultivated … they don’t hesitate in citing Randy Newman, Woody Guthrie and Jacques Dutronc among their influences.
I Can't Imagine , demonstrate that they have the same Strokes-like magnetism but Marcellus Hall and his band go one step further with Health Food Store, a ballad worthy of The Drifters or Arthur Alexander.

REVIEW London Times
WHITE HASSLE: the death of song

The Death of Song is White Hassle's second album. Their first came out seven years ago, when a new york band playing garage rock with artistic pretensions was a novelty. While White Hassle's songwriter, Marcellus Hall, fretted over finances, the world changed. The strokes sold millions, and White Hassle suddenley seem like opportunists rather than trailblazers. But their notion of primitism stretches back further than their competitors', nudging the blues stomp of Drian Jones era Rolling Stones and ancient American folk, as well as 1970s New York punk. A fulsome rerouting of the Hollies' Air That I Breathe paints it as a lost Jagger/Richards classic. And Hall's lyrics, such as those in Health Food Store, where a battle with a cold assumes epic proportions, invoke both Dylanesque surrealism and the dry urban narratives of Paul Auster.  SL
